Tainan is situated on the south-west of Taiwan, the long and narrow
coast faces strong south-west monsoon between summer and autumn. The
wintertime north wind carried sand into the inland, creating damages to
agriculture. The horsetail trees (Casuarina equisetifoliab L.) were
originated from Australia and south-east Asia; they were imported and planted
along the coast during the Japan occupation, planted along the coast.
Up to the present, the governmental hydroelectric policies have
obstructed silt washed down by the highland rivers, leaving them in the
reservoir. Lacking of natural ecosystem, the estuary was not able to
accumulate enough silt, waves and typhoons during summer and autumn time have
cause irreparable damages to south-west coast and the wind break forest.
After that, the shortsighted seawall policy to block waves has separate
people from the beautiful ocean of Formosa, separating human emotion
and history from the horizon of the sky and sea.
he drifting of ancient dugout in vague aborigines’ myth, the passing
Spanish sail and Anping fort built by the Dutch during the great
maritime proven the ambition of men. Today, the original fort foundation and
the surrounding still outlined the attempt. Altogether with the
vestiges of Koxinga, occupation of Qing, cession to Japan and up till now, has
germinated into the chapters and sections of ideologies and myths. The
sand dune by the sea is where the first settler laid their first
footstep and the crucial point for evolution of life. The human history is no
equivalent to evolution of life, but the key point of four hundred of
Taiwan history occur in Anping, Tainan, the pass and future sand dune.

The wind break forest in front of the hundred year’s old Anping
light-house was gradually gaining attention and caring after climatic and
human impact; although surrounded by artificial facilities, the precious
and scare intertidal ecosystem still went on. The environmental art
which is most concerned with natural environment is gradually becoming a
commendable form of art. Twelve artists were invited to collaborate their
works with environmental issues. The project will involve in setting
natural material and color as the highest criterion for individual
creation.
The wooden front in the wind break forest will be the best way to bring
the spectators into the natural surrounding and environmental art. Art
works will be well-placed into the forest, conveying what the artists
have pondered in the natural environment, attempting to initiate the
spectators regarding the link between nature and environmental art, as if
possibilities of life and history that were created between obstacles
and detours make by the windbreak forest in blocking the biting sandstorm and north wind.
The art camp will invited ten domestic and foreign artists to focus on
environmental art creations, which will situated in the wind break
forest between the Sihcao Bridge and Anping lighthouse. Twelve art pieces
in natural material or least artificial material will be located in the
horsetail trees, brushes, and sand dune etc natural site along the
wooden front. The documents of final installation works and
work-in-progress will be shown for a whole month afterward in Tainan Municipal
Cultural Center. An international symposium will be held during the
exhibition, exhibition guide tours are also open for application to students and
the public.
